The Speaker, Kwara state House of Assembly has pledged a renewed commitment to continue to empower the girl child so that they can continue to break barriers, scale hurdles and shatter glass ceilings to make us proud by contributing to the development of our state.

This is contained in a statement personally signed by his, to commemorate 2024 UN Girl Child Day. The statement reads in part, “Today we celebrate the United Nations International Day of the Girl Child. It is a special day set aside to celebrate the strength, resilience, and potential of the girl child worldwide. It is also a day that we, the members of the Kwara State Assembly, the Tenth Legislature celebrate the Kwara girl child.

“We also wish to mark this symbolic day by formally acknowledging and honoring the pioneering role of girl-child education in Kwara by Hon. Hajia Raliatu AbdulRazaq, a nonagenarian and the first female councillor in Kwara, whose life remains a reference point for every girl child.

“Hajia AbdulRazaq in 1968 co-founded with her late husband, Ilorin College Ilorin (ICI) now Government High High School, Adeta the first privately owned college in Kwara. The college has continued to produce women professionals such as Judges, Professors, Lawyers, Medical Doctors, Doctors of Philosophy, public servants, and notable politicians among others.

“She is also the founder of the Raliat Foundation which is a household name in philanthropy in Kwara. Amongst her children are the first female Senator of the FCT and a former First Lady of Kwara.

“It is therefore, not surprising that her son, His Excellency Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON has been inspired by this Heroine of the Girl Child through his policies and programs that are tailored towards the empowerment of womenfolk especially the Political Offices (Gender Composition) Bill of 2021.

“Today, Kwara state currently has the highest female cabinet members in the country and just recently, 15 of the 16 Kwara Local Government Councils elected Vice Chairmen are all women”, he added.
