Kwara CP set up committee to address students and youths harassment by police officers

Kwara State Police Command has set up a joint committee including student leaders and representatives of the government as part of strategies to tackle the issue of harassment in the state.

The initiative was berthed by the Special Assistant to Kwara Governor on Student Matters, Salami Wasiu Onidugbe, following several reports of harassment of students and young people by the police, the latest of such leading to the death of an ND 2 student of Kwara state Polytechnic, Abdulquayum Ishola.

The committee is charged with the responsibility of providing timely and accurate information on incidents of harassment of students by police officers across the campuses.

It would also help the police on deployment of responses or investigations of the cases of harassment of students in the metropolis.

While adopting the committee, Kwara Police Commissioner Mr Victor Olaiya reiterated that the force was ready to punish any officer culpable of malpractice in the discharge of their duties.

He asked the student leaders for renewed cooperation with the police to ensure peace and harmony in the state.
