JAMB: Prof. Oloyede Decries Parent Overbearing Influence on Children

The Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Emeritus Professor Ishiaq Oloyede has decried the overbearing influences of parents in determining the educational pursuit, pace and timing of their children, stressing that such attitude often have long lasting adverse effect on the life of the children.

 

This much was disclosed on the sidelines of the compliance assessment visitation to some selected JAMB registration centres in Ilorin, Kwara State yesterday.

 

He said “Most parents are found of pushing their children too hard, they are jumping natural developmental stages, for selfish reasons, not in the interest of the children.

 

“Majority of the parents are just after enhancing their own bragging rights to the detriment of the natural growth and development of the Children and that’s one of the major reasons why we have high volume of under 16 registrants, who are often acclaimed exceptional students by their parents.

 

“We’ve taken care of the acclaimed exceptional students, who’re under the age of 16, as at September this year. They will all have an undertaking by signing the indemnity form, to be counter-signed by their parents and they will be expected to throw up exceptional results, else their might have to be a form of sanction for wasting the time of the examination body”

 

Meanwhile the Registrar has commended the Jamb registration centres in Ilorin, Kwara State, stressing that they’ve largely adhered to the Standard operating Procedures.

 

He however vowed not to hesitate to wield the big stick on any centre found wanting or engaging in sharp practices across the Country.

 

The centres visited includes; College of Education Ilorin, Alhikma University, Socrates College, Matrix ICT centre and University of Ilorin.
